The Civil War Letters of Henry A. Allen

Years ago I transcribed a collection of Civil War letters written by Capt. Henry A. Allen - co. A, 9th Virginia Infantry Regiment and published them on this site. Allen was captured at Gettysburg and he wrote home to his wife Sarah frequently while serving as a prisoner of war. I thought the letters said a lot about life for an officer in northern prisons and about the patriarchal power structure of the war era.

Just today, thanks to some outstanding advice from my wife, Lady Balls Nation host Coni Constantine, I've launched a new media component to the Allen collection: each weekday, I will offer a reading of an Allen letter - in order - from August 1863 to the end of the war.

The show features authentic Civil War era music performed by Dusty Lee Elmer, and is available on iTunes, Stitcher, and Spotify. And...you'll want to subscribe at one of the above platforms as soon as you can so that you do not miss a letter.

With compliments,

Keith
