Hey all - so I am very happy to end 2019 on a positive note with my podcast, The Rogue Historian. It’s been a fantastic year...and the show has grown a great deal - thanks to listeners such as yourself. I really appreciate the Tweets and reTweets and private messages you’ve sent adding to the discussion. I have learned a TON, but more important, I’ve been inspired by my guests and listeners to broaden my thinking on all sorts of subjects. While I tend to focus on Civil War and Reconstruction studies…I am intrigued by many different topics and methodologies. What’s great about The Rogue Historian guest list is that sometimes we agree and sometimes we don’t - but we’re always up for lively and constructive discourse…which is what pushes the discipline forward. So with that in mind, here are the links to some excellent episodes from 2019. You should listen to them all…of course! But these will certainly give you a taste of the show.

Sarah Handley Cousins - we discuss disability and Civil War veterans and her book, of course - Bodies in Blue: Disability in the Civil War North. This show was part of a series on veterans also featuring Diane Miller Sommerville, Jonathan Jones, and Kate Dalhstrand.

Robert Lee Hodge - a trippy dude…we discuss his life as the world’s most famous Civil War reenactor/living historian.

Kevin Kruse - Twitter’s historian and author of White Flight: Atlanta and the Making of Modern Conservatism (among others). We discuss the good, bad, and ugly of history and social media.

Victoria Bynum - author of The Free State of Jones. We discussed her book, class, and the vastly complex history beyond the movie.

Kevin Levin - we discuss his new book, Searching for Black Confederates: The Civil War’s Most Persistent Myth and how he has the Internet’s best haters :)

Julio Capó, Jr. - author of Welcome to Fairyland: Queer Miami before 1940. We discuss queer Miami before 1940 and the utility of public history…one of my favorite topics.

Ashleigh Lawrence-Sanders - another one of my favorite topics. History and Hollywood…in particular, racism in the early film industry.

Chris Gwinn - a ten-year veteran of the National Park Service, Chris and I discuss public history at Gettysburg National Military Park.

Keri Leigh Merritt - author of  Masterless Men: Poor Whites and Slavery in the Antebellum South. We discuss the legacy of Ken Burns’s The Civil War and her call for a new - more inclusive - Civil War documentary.

Matt Palmquist - the mastermind behind CivilWarHumor…because we could all stand to lighten up a bit - I mean :)

Robert Greene II - creator of the blog, “Forty Acres and a Starship.” We discuss the role of the historian in the 2019…and beyond.

Matt Loughrey - we discuss the utility of “enhancing” historical images through digital colorization…and I will ultimately reveal why I was initially wrong on the subject.

Pamela D. Toler - we discuss her book, Heroines of Mercy Street: The Real Nurses of the Civil War and the tie-in to the PBS mini-series.
